Dilettante Press is a great resource for several wonderful books and some really great articles by and about  visionary art. For example, they have recently devoted space to visionary artists William Thomas Thompson and Norbert H. Kox, both known internationally for their Apocalyptic art, have worked together on an individual canvas to create a powerful indictment of the apostate universal church system and the traditions of men.

Quotes below are from the article about Thompson and Kox's painting:

This painting is referenced from Revelation 18:23, where the King James translation of "sorceries" comes from the Greek word pharmakia, literally "drugging", symbolically "idolatry". The piece warns against the deceptions of false teachers. It also points out the use of counterfeit images as modern-day idol worship. It is a depiction of and warning against the idolatry that is drugging the end time church, resulting in "religious" addiction, bondage, and death.

The gist of the whole piece is to entice the viewer to question traditions and inherited beliefs while embarking on an active search for and investigation of truth. Look to the word of God, not the traditions of men. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and search for truth in the Scriptures: "Seek and ye shall find".

".... Probably the greatest joy from collecting this kind of art is that you can easily meet the artists. The experiences I've had, and the friendships I've made with artists are worth far more to me than owning the actual art. When you get to know an artist, and hear their story firsthand, the art takes on new meaning. Now every time I look at a Jimmie Sudduth painting in my house, I think of his sly smile and the wonderful afternoons I've spent in Fayette.

I've seen more than 30 artists and I've yet to have a bad experience with any of them. Most artists want people to see their work, and love to meet fans. These people are happy to invite you into their homes and work spaces and spend as much time with you as you'd like. You can buy work directly from most artists at a fraction of the cost you'd pay in an art gallery (of course when you do this you're limited in selection to whatever the artist has on hand).

I'm happy to share any information I can (addresses, phone numbers, directions) on how to go see these artists (e-mail: dacrotty@its.caltech.edu). If you do go, please be respectful. Remember you are a guest in their home. Don't haggle with the artist over prices...." from Self Taught Folk Art  A collector of Outsider Art shares his experiences, advice and collection.

Some Great Starting Points

Interesting Ideas This is an amazing PORTAL into the World of Folk and Outsider Art... in virtually ALL of its many aspects.

American Visionary Art Museum (Baltimore)  "....Not only is the museum the national repository for the artworks created by self-taught artists, the building's architecture is an artistic creation unto itself -winning many international and national awards for its design and beauty. Our venue is easily accessible by foot (a 15 minute walk from the Convention Center) or by water transport (Water Taxi or Harbor Shuttle) and convenient to all of Baltimore's downtown attractions...."

The Orange Show

"You could take 100,000 architects... 100,000 engineers... and all of them together couldn't conceive of a work like this...." Jeff McKissack, founder, The Orange Show

The Orange Show Foundation  "The Orange Show is a monumental work of handmade architecture in Houston's east end. Over the last fifteen years it has become a monument and a beacon, a center for the study of visionary environments and a community gathering place where people come to experience and celebrate the creative process. .... non- profit organization, founded in 1980 to preserve, present, promote and popularize the extraordinary artistic expressions of ordinary people.... The Orange Show is a folk-art environment - a monumental work of handmade architecture - in Houston's east end. It was built single handedly from 1956 until its completion in 1979, by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack, Houston postal worker. The outdoor 3,000 square foot monument is maze like in design and includes an oasis, a wishing well, a pond, a stage, a museum, a gift shop, and several upper decks. It is constructed of concrete, brick, steel and found objects including gears, tiles, wagon wheels, mannequins, tractor seats and statuettes. Jeff McKissack's creation extols the virtues of his favorite fruit and encourages visitors of all ages to follow his theories relating health and longevity to good nutrition, hard work and eating oranges. The Orange Show is one of the most important folk art environments in the United States...."
