Famous Dead People

Timothy Leary's Last Trip  ".... Leary died peacefully of natural causes in his own bed on the night of May 31, 1996. He was surrounded by friends and family. After a festive wake, his body was cremated and the ashes were divided amongst loved ones. As his longtime friend John Perry Barlow writes: "Timothy Leary died unashamed and having, as usual, a great time. He made good on his promise to 'give death a better name or die trying.' Willingly, peacefully, and unafraid, he headed off on his last trip'."

Bizarre Deaths of Famous People

Tom Mix Killed by a Flying Suitcase
"Mix was a cowboy movie star; a big one. He appeared in over 300 Westerns. He lived the life of a bon-vivant; by the early 1920s this former Texas Ranger was earning the princely sum of $10,000 a week. But when the talkies arrived, Tom's career fell as flat as a chuckwagon pancake. He ended up working in rodeos and circuses, then died in 1940 in a weird automobile accident, his head crushed by a suitcase that flew off the rear shelf of his single-seated roadster in the middle of the desert.

"Tom Mix should have been forgotten. Most of his movies — released on combustible nitrate film stock — have been lost. But those who remembered Tom Mix built Roadside tributes to him, and these stubbornly survive. Now the people who remembered Tom Mix are dying, too. Our advice: Visit Tom Mix shrines soon."

Macabre Diversions and Games

Dark Passage "...was conceived in 1998 with the purpose of perpetuating the spirit of the long-defunct San Francisco Suicide Club.  In the late 1970s the Suicide Club organized renegade events in infiltrated spaces under the motto of living "each day as if it were the last."  When it disbanded, some of its former members created the similarly spirited Cacophony Society, with chapters in Los Angeles, Detroit, Brooklyn and other cities. It was at a Brooklyn Cacophony meeting that the main instigators of Dark Passage first connected. The other New York group evolving from these meetings — focused less on a transformation of ruinous spaces than on artistic street events — was the Madagascar Institute, with which we have always been heavily interlinked.  In the course of organizing clandestine scavenger hunts and other frivolities, Dark Passage has discovered a plethora of derelict sites, the exploration of which has fed an ever more urgent obsession. Rather than seeing the documentation of these spaces as an end in itself, it is meant as fodder for further creative projects. In the meantime, however, some of the photos and stories resulting from our excursions are presented on this site."

Museums of Death

The Museum of Death ".... might be the best place in the country to view death in all its gruesome, and, yes, humorous details. Housed in the basement of the first mortuary in San Diego (the esteemed Young and Young Furniture), with the Museum of Death sign located strategically above a tobacco shop, owner J. D. Healy's long thin museum has immortalized the macabre in a series of rooms designed to educate and SHOCK. Upon entering you'll pass Lady, an afghan sprawled on the floor in peaceful repose, except on closer examination you realize she's been sleeping for quite a long time (try ten years). The highlight is the starkly realistic photographs of Mel Kilpatrick, the late photographer for the Orange County Coroner's office, whose work shows the real face of fatality and the finer details of death none of us ever see even in the tabloids: gushing intestines, caved-in faces, gashes the size of ravines made by falling lawnmowers. This stuff is so extreme the teenagers viewing it could only deal by snickering, completely out of touch from the gross reality before them. The museum has several other highlights--a purple veil worn by a Heaven's Gater (the entire bedroom set, including Nike shoes, will soon be on display), memorabilia from the Manson murders with gory coroners photos of all the victims (including a nude, bloody, and pregnant Sharon Tate), a casket room showing an eight-hour continuous loop video called "The Traces of Death" (watch a guy chained between two jeeps get his arm ripped away when the vehicles speed off in opposite directions or an Indian man with a severe case of elephantiasis), and the Museum's prized possession, a Laotian Buddhist Funeral Float that was to be used for a high-ranking Laotian Monk. Because the city of San Diego wouldn't allow the burning of the entire pyre, a place had to be found for the funeral float. Why not the Museum of Death?

"J. D.'s museum is slowly becoming a repository for other items related to tragedy, including the notorious McDonald's Massacre in San Ysidro. With numerous photo essays and press clippings on the likes of Night Stalker Richard Ramirez and "Son of Sam" Henry Lucas, you can spend hours scanning these walls....."  CLICK HERE for more of the story.

" According to a Roadside America article, The Mütter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia promises — and delivers — an afternoon of esoteric and incredible sights. The sophisticated, high-ceilinged gallery that houses this collection of medical monstrosities helps us rationalize our interest in it. Designed for perusal by present and future members of a dignified overpaid profession, the museum is two floors of dark wood-trimmed display cases and a library-like stateliness. Shouts of "Will ya look at this MONSTER BABY?" are entirely inappropriate."   Here are just a few highlights:

  • Soap Woman: the body of a woman who died of Yellow Fever sometime in the 19th century and was buried in soil with certain chemical properties that turned her into soap!
  • a plaster cast of Chang and Eng AND their actual attached livers
  • Chevalier Jackson Collection of objects swallowed and removed
  • Brains of murderers and epileptics
  • The "Secret Tumor of Grover Cleveland
  • The "Thorax of John Wilkes Booth
  • A giant colon
  • Large collection of baby deformities.
  • Skeletons of a giant and a midget
  • "Brain Of A Murderer" - John Wilson hanged in Norristown, PA
  • Longitudinal slices of the head, showing brain, etc.
  • Skull Collections, including the Muniz collection of trephinated (holes cut in them)"

"...Niagara Falls vies with San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge for the dubious title of most popular place to end it all. Ahlgrim"s Funeral Parlor
"The most hair-raising miniature golf we've ever played is in the basement of a funeral home in suburban Chicago. The nine hole course, "Ahlgrim Acres," includes obstacles such as coffins and headstones, with a one stroke penalty for bypassing the coffin on Hole #2. Screams and spooky music play continually.

"Miniature golf is offered by Ahlgrims as a standard part of their funeral package -- and many take it. The course is used by local shriners to hold meetings and initiations, though anyone can play as long as a funeral isn't in progress. It's not all grim at Ahlgrims!"

 Historical Corpses

Capuchins' Catacombs "are located in Palermo, Italy. There are thousands of corpses lined on the walls like paintings.

"The catacombs date back to the 1599 when the local priests mummified a holy monk for all to see. They wanted to pray to him after death.

"In time the locals wanted their relatives remembered in this same way. Soon there were hundreds of corpses. Some of the deceased wrote wills, expressing the clothes in which to bury them in. Some asked to have their clothes changed over a period of time. Included in the catacombs are hundreds of coffins as well. Some contain the corpse that was buried in them. The side is sometimes cut to expose the deceased."

Improved Burial Case "The nature of this invention consists in placing on the lid of the coffin, and directly over the face of the body laid therein, a square tube, which extends from the coffin up through and over the surface of the grave, said tube containing a ladder and a cord, one end of said cord being placed in the hand of the person laid in the coffin, and the other end of said cord being attached to a bell on the top of the square tube, so that, should a person be interred ere life is extinct, he can, on recovery to consciousness, ascend from the grave and the coffin by the ladder; or, if not able to ascend by said ladder, ring the bell, thereby giving an alarm, and thus save himself from premature burial and death; and if, on inspection, life is extinct, the tube is withdrawn, the sliding door closed, and the tube used for a similar purpose. . .
