AFF is widely considered one of the most respected and longest-running festivals in the United States."  Article in Oz Online

Boston Underground Film Festival  "... Underground Film Festival (B.U.F.F.) is an annual festival committed to the celebration of alternative vision and cultivation of independent, provocative and experimental filmmaking. By featuring work that pushes the envelope in form, style and content, B.U.F.F. seeks to be a platform for the screening of new work and a forum for the exchange of ideas amongst filmmakers, curators and audiences."

Brooklyn Underground Film Festival

Carolina Film and Video Festival

Connecticut Filmmaker Festival

Crossroads Film Festival  "If you think you know Mississippi ... think again! Jackson, Mississippi is the cultural crossroads of the south (hence the name - Crossroads Film Festival) and is the place where all the good stuff gets thrown together.

"This is where the music of delta bluesman Robert Johnson runs straight into the home of the international ballet competition. We are home to literary greats like Richard Wright, Tennessee Williams, Willie Morris, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, and some of the worlds greatest historians, photographers, and musicians....

"We are also home to some real quirky and creative folks, a little southern hospitality, fried catfish, sweet tea, and a film festival to rival the best of them.

"Come see us, and we will show you a great time."

Cucalorus Film Festival Wilmington, NC, End of March. "Beginning with a magical event in the fall of 1994, Cucalorus has established itself as one of the few truly independent film festivals in the world, serving the needs of filmmakers before the interests of corporate sponsors or the studios. Praise has come from many places for our renegade style and grassroots approach to festival making. MovieMaker magazine dubbed the festival "the best kept secret on the indie fest circuit" in 2003 and went on to list the festival as one of the "20 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" the following year. Despite having the window dressing of a formal business, Cucalorus maintains a rebel style, mirroring the world of independent and underground filmmaking."

Rooftop Films

Sundance Film Festival

"I’m on a budget. What’s the best way to have a great Festival experience on the cheap?"

"Did you know that tickets to individual screenings are only $10? Considering that it’s about the same price to see a movie at your local multiplex and that every Festival film is followed by a Q&A with the director (and often members of the cast), that’s a pretty good deal!"

More "inside insights" into how to get the best Sundance experience possible click here. (Like if Park City is too pricey... commute from Salt Lake City which is just 45 minutes away.)

Hint: bid on a hotel at SLC at Priceline.com.  You can often get hotels for as little as 75% off advertised price.

Texas Film Festival  "...  the largest student-run independent film festival in the nation ..."

Tribeca Film Festival  End of April in NYC. FAQS Seeing a movie at the Tribeca Film Festival is a one-of-a-kind experience:

International Film Festivals

Berlinale Berlin Film Festival 2nd week February... with a theme for each festival.  For example, the 55th annual festival focuses on Production Design:

"Films fascinate us with their sensory multiplicity. Language, music and sounds, colours, lighting and the performance of the actors make a film a complex experience. Often it is precisely the spaces and panoramas, or sometimes even a sole object which leaves a lasting impression. Cinematic constructions can accentuate the suspense of a plot, an interior can become a universe of emotions and a prop can be transformed into the tool of a subtle seduction. The key to intimate understanding of a film often lies in the production design. The work of the production designer will be the centre of attention on two occasions at the upcoming Berlinale: the Retrospective will be dedicated to a thorough investigation of the topic and the Berlinale Talent Campus will deal with the various aspects that determine the “look” of a film. Renowned production designers are invited to Berlin for both events to shed light ..."

Cannes Film Festival   "More widely known as the "Festival de Cannes", the Association Franзaise du Festival International du Film, created in 1946, is a French association under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, state-approved in 1972. The spirit of the Festival de Cannes is one of friendship and universal cooperation. Its aim is to reveal and focus attention on works of quality in order to contribute to the progress of the motion picture arts and to encourage the development of the film industry throughout the world."
